Repertoire that will get you through summer on that 4.3 marimba

I've come up with a list of traditional and new works for marimba, many of which I suggested my students learn this summer. This list includes several intermediate level marimba pieces that will fit on a 4.0 octave or 4.3 octave marimba, since many students don't have access to a 5.0 marimba at home. It's so nice to have access to a 5.0 octave marimba while in college, but if you only have access to the smaller options for the summer months, you can still work on some significant repertoire. And if you've always had access to a 5.0 marimba, then you should still check out this repertoire! This rep will certainly keep you motivated and busy during the summer months. I have not listed any Mitchell Peters or Gomez/Rife tunes, as they are so numerous, but they will fit on a 4.0 and 4.3 marimba, too. This is by no means a complete list, just something to help narrow down the options available. Some of this repertoire is found on current competition lists like the Great Plains Marimba Competition and the 2016 International Percussion Competition at Northwestern University (go 'Cats!). Here goes:

4.0 Octave:
  • Marimba Dances by Ross Edwards
  • Musser Etudes: B Major, C Major, A flat Major
  • Frogs by Keiko Abe
  • Ghanaia by Matthias Schmitt
  • Astral Dance by Gordon Stout
  • Etudes for Marimba, book 1 by Gordon Stout
  • Two Movements for Marimba by Toshimitsu Tanaka

4.3 Octave (all of the above plus):
  • Seven Brazilian Children's Songs by Ney Rosauro (great tunes for the beginning  player)
  • Rhythm Song and Etude No. 1 by Paul Smadbeck
  • Four Rotations by Eric Sammut
  • Five Preludes by Casey Cangelosi
  • Michi by Keiko Abe
  • Dance of the Witches and Stout Sonata by Eckhard Kopetzki
  • Eruption of Sakurajima by Jessica Muniz-Collado
  • Parody by Jesse Monkman
  • Restless and Tune for Mary O. by Rich O'Meara
  • Lost Mountain Sunrise and A Cricket Sang and Set the Sun by Blake Tyson
  • Two Mexican Dances by Gordon Stout
  • Marimba Concerto Suite by Ney Rosauro (a compilation of themes from the first marimba concerto, no accompanist needed)
  • October Night by Michael Burritt

2 Mallet Suggestions:
  • Transcriptions of works for the African gyil by Valerie Naranjo. If you have not performed these kind of 2-mallet pieces before (there is much independence required), I recommend starting with Darkpey song collection No. 2 (Nite Song and Fra-Fra song)
  • Two by Gene Koshinski (a variety of really wonderful pieces!)
  • Musser's Etude in A flat Major
  • Prism by Keiko Abe
I recommend www.lonestarpercussion.com to order any of these pieces (don't use copies!!!). They also have a filter that helps find repertoire for a particular size of marimba. Happy Practicing!

Hi,

I am also a percussionist, and I was wondering if you had any suggestions for concertos that can fit on a 4.3 octave marimba. Really liked this post btw!
